Individual Therapy and Counseling

Sometimes we have struggles and problems in our lives that we don’t know how to fix on our own.  We all go through periods where we feel down or have anxiety and just need someone to talk to.  Sometimes, we don’t want to burden our loved ones with our issues or we’re ashamed of how we’re feeling and it becomes embarrasing to share with people that know us.  Maybe the struggle we’re experiencing is ABOUT our loved ones.

It could be that the underlying issues that are causing distress are from situations that happened long ago and family and friends say, “Just get over it! It’s in the past!”….as if it were just that easy. Many times, these problems have bothered us for years and years- affecting our relationships, our ability to enjoy life, and perception of ourselves.

Sometimes there’s nothing major wrong…we just are looking for a change, to make self-improvement, increase our personal empowerment or improve peak performance.

Regardless of how the challenges started or whether or not there’s a root cause, individual counseling can help!

The Denver Center of Psychotherapy offers a variety of therapy options to help you move through personal challenges and improve emotional problems.  Your therapist can help you decide which option may work best for you when  you meet for your intake appointment.

Talk Therapy

Traditional talk therapy is what most people think of when they think of counseling or therapy.  You and your therapist will talk through most of your session. 

Your therapist will use techniques from a variety of therapy modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution Focused Therapy (SFT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Reality Therapy to name a few. 

Using these techniques, your therapist will help guide you through a path of self-discovery and you and your therapist will process the information together.  Your therapist may assign you homework assignments to help you continue your work while you’re not in the therapy office.

EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement, Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a different type of individual therapy.  With EMDR therapy, you and your therapist will talk together about your history for the first few sessions as well as do some prepratory work to set up the EMDR treatment, such as choosing the method of EMDR (hand held buzzers or headphones). 

Once that is completed, the EMDR treatment is ready to begin.  There is little talking between you and your therapist in EMDR treatment after the first few sessions.  Instead, you are focused on the bilateral stimulation through tones alternating to each ear while wearing headphones or to each hand while holding hand held buzzers.  The stimulation of both sides of your brain helps to you process through the issues you and your therapist agreed to work on.

Neurofeeback is cutting edge technology that trains your brain to make healthier patterns and rewards it when it does so.  This type of therapy typically starts with your therapist creating a brain map by recording your brain’s waves through electrodes.  This is a completely non-evasive process and absolutely painless.  The brain map will let the therapist know where your brain is deficient in specific brain waves or where it is overproducing specific brainwaves.  From that point, it’s just a matter of training your brain through feedback games to adjust the waves. 

Neurofeedback has been demonstrated to be effective in addressing the stress symptoms of many disorders as well as improving peak performance.  There have also been many people that have been able to reduce or completely get off of medications after Neurofeedback (of course, do not do this without consulting your physician!).

Biofeedback is a broad term for providing feedback to the body to change body functions.  Neurofeedback is a type of biofeedback.

We also use other biofeedback methods to help our clients:

HeartMath®- This form of biofeedback focuses on heart rate variability.  It helps clients learn to manage stress through bringing their heart rate, breathing, and brain waves in line with one another.  It is a non-invasive process.

Alpha-Stim®- This form of biofeedback is a Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation (CES) unit that produces a low level electrical current that safely and effectively treats anxiety, depression, insomnia, and pain issues.
